Eisenhower High School’s wrestling department is no stranger to greatness when it comes to individual competition. The accolades show this too, we have been on a great streak of CIF appearances in the past three or more years. But this year, the Golden Gazette is delighted to present something that has surpassed all lights before this.
Over the past few weeks, 5 wrestlers qualified for major CIF Tournaments, including two female wrestlers, Junior Emily Mayorga and Freshman Mariah Mayorga. Two of our very own male wrestlers have also become CIF-SS Individual Champions! Sophomore Mathius Garza and Senior Jerry Carlos put the effort into their work and craft and have made history as a result, being the first time in school history that we can claim two wrestlers that have become CIF Wrestling Champions. After a wonderful season and exciting fights, these two talented athletes (plus Junior Azuan Gonzales) faced CIF Masters Saturday February 22nd and got exceptionally far in the competition, Mathius almost making it the whole way through the tournament. Aside from that, Garza’s and Gonzales’ individual performances landed them spots in the CIF State Wrestling Championship, a feat truly one to greatly commend. The Eisenhower Golden Gazette sports department congratulates these talented athletes for making history time and time again, as this is additionally the first time in school history that two male wrestlers have qualified for the State Championship.
We would also like to greatly commend the effort that not only student-athletes put into the sport, but the Coaches and Athletic Trainers that have continued to support these athletes and ensure that they are in great shape to compete and continue the legacy of greatness that follows in their wake. Congratulations, Wrestling! From the Golden Gazette, this was your update on the great job that our athletic department has been doing so far.
