The football team at Eisenhower high school consists of up to 50 players, about 30 on Frosh-soph and about 20 on varsity. The amount of players that are able to actively be on the field during a game is 11. Our main coach is coach Brown and consists of 3 other assistant coaches which are coach Pue, coach Ted, and coach Chavez. I personally think some interesting things that go on is how we engage at practice with each other, it’s like once you join the team you are instantly connected with everybody. This shows you are never left out as we are one team, also know that you should come to impress and come with a good attitude and also good sportsmanship. This is a thing coaches also look for, which is how you work with others.
During tryouts they look for your skill but also how well you can interact with others. Tryouts aren’t too bad usually it’s really just you taking your shot because there are others who are trying just as hard or harder. Tryouts feel hard during the first few days but once you get the flow you should start getting used to it. They look for skills such as how fast you are, how fit you are for certain positions, how well your footwork is if you’re looking to be a wide receiver, and if you’re looking to be a defensive back they look for how well you transition in movement or how well you can look for the ball. One thing they also look for in a defensive back is how well they can track the ball or just stay on their man. Something they look for in wide receivers is how well you can get off the line or how well you can get to the ball. There are also things they look for in a quarterback, not just throwing skills but also how well you can throw under pressure or just how well you can read the field. Also if you’re looking to be a lineman they also look at how well you work under pressure not just blocking skills they look for how well your vision is when it comes to blocking someone going after the quarterback.
Before we end, the last week is called hell week, which is a week full of workouts and conditioning, and you must be at practice by 6 am. Throughout hell week it consists of working out where in the weight room you would have to bench press, do squats and dumbbells and everyday you would have to do a heavier weight. They do this so during football games you will be strong enough to hit and stay up when you get hit and make tackles so be prepared. At first practice seems hard but as long as you keep working on your skills. Hell week is also a challenge so be prepared because usually most don’t wake up that early. But if you really want to be a part of football this is used to show your determination and also is a time to prove more of your skills and how well you can handle it all. This is mainly to see how well you can endure the challenges. So during hell week give it your all try to make practices on time and even if it is the hardest practices you have it’s the time to show how you improve throughout it.
Also I suggest doing home workouts as well and every day stay hydrated. Also, you will have to get a sports physical to be able to continue playing through the season. A sports physical is needed to ensure you are in shape and nothing is wrong with your body they also ensure your athleticism. It also takes you having a strong mindset and a strong will for the sport. Also be sure to keep up with everyone and be social and make sure to make good connections with everyone. Good suggested tips are to stay well hydrated and whenever there isn’t practice use some of your free time to do some extra workouts or to prepare your body.
The second week of practice, we have media day, where the varsity suits up in all types of colored uniforms and take pictures of the team individually and in a group. Besides media day, we have a day where varsity and jv get to suit up and take the yearly team photos. And during game days, we are able to choose what uniforms we want to play in and what accessories we use; we are also provided with custom Eisenhower football team gloves as well as custom compression shirts. So if there is any equipment you do not have you can also request to be provided with some. Equipment they provide is shoulder pads, knee pads, girdles, and also a helmet. We also get provided with our own locker rooms. There is a jv locker and a separate varsity locker room, but make sure to bring your own lock.
I think the reason I am there is roughly because I have a passion for the sport and it’s also a really fun sport to participate in. Even though we hit it’s still a really fun experience especially when you’re playing with your friends or people you have a strong connection with. Most of the people who play now are there for their passion for playing the sport and some want to go pro. Also there’s a group where they’re there for the experience and just having fun. You should be here no matter if you have a strong passion for it or you just want the experience it doesn’t matter. We have a lot to offer as well as special field trips to Oregon or Vegas and if you want to experience that type of stuff you should join the team. We also offer a 7 on 7 team if you’re interested in growing more in football. This is an opportunity for you to grow throughout the sport and also gain a lot of experience.
