The presidential election of 2024 took place on Tuesday, November 5th, 2024. The candidates were; Kamala Harris for Democrats, Donald Trump for Republicans, Cornell West, Jill Stein, Chase Oliver, and Claudia De la Cruz all for Independent and third-party. Donald Trump won the popular vote as well as 312 electoral college votes and Kamala Harris with 226 electoral college votes.
The main worry for the majority of the undocumented immigrants or people that come from immigrant families, is that Donald Trump will erase the opportunities that were once offered to them and, even worse, deportation and tearing down their families.
In the latest campaign speech that was given by Trump after he won the election he vows to have “the largest deportation operation in American history”. In 2016 there were numerous deported immigrants mostly Hispanic who migrated to the U.S. to look for a better life. I myself am an undocumented immigrant and I can reassure you that I am worried about my future education considering Trump’s plans and I believe I’m not alone in this.
Trump is also planning to remove the Department of Education, force monitoring of women’s pregnancies, remove Medicaid and prohibit abortions, and remove all rights for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community making them unable to marry their spouse. In the bigger picture, it’s not just immigrants in danger but women in general, students who don’t come from privileged families, and LGBTQ+.
