Being a Student Athlete

Being a Student Athlete

When we see athletes as a kid, we tend to look up to them. Even today we can tend to look up to certain athletes but most people will overlook the challenges and struggles of being an athlete. I’ve been an athlete for almost two years and I have learned how being an athlete isn’t just playing the game, it takes strength, commitment and learning. Here are some things I learned for becoming an athlete.

Having good grades

Every sport does this in high school. If you don’t have good grades then you can’t play. So this means that we need to do our work in our classes and listen to our teachers even when we don’t want to. I get it. Some classes and teachers suck but that doesn’t mean we can just not do anything. We have to do our work whether we like it or not. Not everyone wants to do school work and I get that but we have too. If we are gonna be serious with a sport then we need to be serious with our grades.

Fitting it with our schedule

What I mean by this is being able to fit sports with our schedule. Knowing if we would be physically able to make practice meetings and games. We can’t just jump into a sport without realizing the requirements and commitment we have to do. This also means to be able to put extra work at home like working out so we can be stronger and better in that sport.

Being fully committed

When being an athlete we gotta be fully committed. This means making practices, games, meetings, and more. Being an athlete takes a lot of commitment and we also need to be coachable. This means being okay with making mistakes and letting your coach help you. We all are gonna mess up and we need to be okay with that. No matter how good someone is, no one is the best player out there. The best players out there are people in the pros and even then they still learn and go to practice. Unless you have a good reason everyone should go to practice no matter how good you are because everyone can learn and see how to do better.

Being an athlete is tough. It takes a lot out of you but from my experiences I learned that I need to push through. We all need to be able to push through and not give up. I hope this article helped show how it is to be an athlete and I just hope you understand what the cost is to be an athlete.
