Camp Flog Gnaw: History & Cultural Importance

Every year, thousands of fans gather at Dodger’s Stadium to attend the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival. Camp Flog Gnaw is an annual festival hosted by Tyler, The Creator that features some of today’s top artists. Camp Flog Gnaw has had a long history as it originally started in 2012 as the OFWGTKA carnival. It was a small block party held on Fairfax Avenue to celebrate the release of Tyler’s 2nd album ‘Goblin.’ The lineup included Odd Future, the former collective Tyler was a part of, members such as Mike G, Left Brain, Domo Genesis and Hodgy Beats along with other non-Odd Future artists such as The Internet, Mac Miller, The 2 Live Crew, etc. Since then, the number of artists who perform has expanded with the popularity of the festival expanding as well.

Deriving from humble beginnings, Tyler originally began the festival as a celebration of not only his own creativity but also as a place for people to express their own. He wanted to create an event which was a representation of his creative beliefs that he could share with a variety of artists and thousands of people as his audience. After many years, Tyler has partnered with Goldenvoice, an established concert and festival company, to produce the festival on a larger scale. Since this partnership, the lineup of artists and accessibility to audiences has grown. Tickets give fans access to live performances, carnival rides and games, food and fun. The festival has grown so popular over the years that tickets often sell out minutes after being released. In 2023 alone, the festival had over 40,000 in attendance with most tickets selling out within minutes after their release.

Camp Flog Gnaw is more than a music festival to many. At its core, the festival represents how creativity, music and passion can draw people together and foster expression. As it is open for all ages to attend, its message is able to be spread throughout generations and reach large, diverse audiences. This year’s lineup includes artists such as Tyler, The Creator, Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky, Tems, Don Toliver, Earl Sweatshirt, Malcolm Todd, GloRilla, Doechii, Clairo, Teezo Touchdown and many others. What was originally started as a neighborhood block party has transformed into a cultural phenomena that has impacted modern culture and music alike.
