Here at Eisenhower we have a child development class that is taught by the wonderful Ms.Bravo. As a project students have to wear empathy bellies which represent a pregnant woman that is 6-7 months pregnant, students of both genders wear it. It is important for students to understand what a pregnant woman has to go through while they are creating life. Wearing the empathy bellies really reflects what a pregnant woman goes through while they go through gestation and also when it comes to pushing on the bladder and having added weight to the person that has the belly on. The empathy belly is a heavy water belly that also has a ball inside that moves around showing the same size of a baby that would be inside of the belly. While having the belly on there can be other students that consistently give awkward looks making the person feel uncomfortable as well as other students trying to touch the belly that don’t even know the person. It’s important for a male student to understand the challenges a woman can face, it can also prepare them for having a future partner with a baby or having a baby with their partner. It can make males more mature about pregnancy knowing what a pregnant woman goes through and maybe they will help out a pregnant woman for example helping out with her groceries. While it can be a funny project it shows the real life of what a pregnant woman goes through so people can see the realities of a pregnancy. Empathy bellies are also a reason why students like to join the child-development class combining a mixture of fun with studies. Students can get a great understanding with a sense of empathy while also having entertainment.
