The latest reboot of Superman is a must watch. Filled with the thrilling action, heartfelt moments, and cheesy but no extra cheese comedic moments, this movie kept those three categories consistent throughout the entire movie. This movie was directed by no other than James Gunn himself and is a part of his brand new DCU ( DC Universe). If you are a fan of how heroes handle all the drama in their lives such as relationship issues, trying to save the world, or any other shenanigans along those lines then this movie is for you. Also, here’s a random fun fact; Superman is confirmed to get a sequel movie! How about them apples.
The movie takes place during modern times where Superman has already established himself. He is already well known to the city of Metropolis. There was a war about to start between the two countries called Boravia and Jarhanpar but superman came between the two and stopped them before any conflict could happen. It turns out Lex Luthor is behind the war and is working against Superman. The movie focuses on the pressure of being a man’s hero and handling adversity. Superman goes through a lot of adversity in this movie but he never gives up.
There is one thing that stands out from this movie and I’d like to thank David Corenswet and James Gunn for making this factor of Superman’s identity emphasized and it’s how human Superman acts throughout the film. Throughout the movie there’s lots of sequences where you can relate to Superman as if he’s human as well. It is known that Superman is an alien and in Zack Snyder’s “Man Of Steel” Superman doesn’t have much regard for human life other than his parents and significant other. But thankfully in the Superman movie he has high regards for us. Now for the side characters like Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) , Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) , Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) , and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) are all played fantastically. A comic book character could be tough but these actors nailed it. Mr. Terrific was cool and smooth, green lantern was comedic and strong, Hawk girl was brave and a bit quirky, Lex Luthor was Lex Luthor. He was portrayed perfectly. Lois Lane on the other hand felt more like a nuisance than a lover.
This movie’s CGI was a bit clunky but it was overall good. But the action sequences in this movie were rather repetitive. Superman didn’t utilize some of his main powers enough, it was more like he found out he could do one thing and kept doing it over and over. But I do appreciate the fact that Superman is more humanized and the comedy isn’t too quirky but rather amusing.
Overall the lessons in this movie are made clear and emphasized well throughout the movie. The main lesson should be to no matter circumstances are against you always stay resilient. Another main theme is the fact to never be envious towards someone because of their fame or their likeliness. Envy causes obsession and that is not good whatsoever. The last theme I could take from this movie is identity. Always remember who you are as a person and know that it is okay to be a normal human being.
If you haven’t watched this movie I strongly recommend you watch it. I would recommend this to little cousins or younger siblings but not necessarily to the older crowd. It felt more like a child’s movie than an adult movie.
I give this movie a B+. I just have to say I’m rather impressed with the execution of this reboot although it isn’t A+ tier it is a really good movie. This movie doesn’t focus on superman’s fighting capabilities as much and superman’s full potential as a fighter. He was constantly in need of help throughout the movie which is okay but at the same time he was outshined by others. Hopefully in Man of Tomorrow he gets the spotlight fighting wise so that we can all see how strong superman really is.
