On March 18 2008 an artist was born. Guadalupe Gonzalez Ambriz is a senior here at Eisenhower Highschool with an artistic passion for self expression and creativity. “ I like to think I am a unique person, “ she told me in our interview. To her, art is a way to be creative and appreciate the skills you have. Lupe expressed to me the positive impact of being an artist has on her and how she feels. She says, “ I get to feel proud of myself “ and “ My art makes me feel really, really, really awesome. . . It makes me feel good about myself and makes me feel good about my talent” She states the whole process of creating an art piece motivates her because she actually wants to see it finished and she wants it to look exactly like how she imagined it. “ It makes me feel good, tranquil, and positive” Another motivator for Guadalupe includes all her inspirational teachers and role models. Mr. Linares is an art teacher here at IKE located in J – 6. He plays a very important role in Guadalupe’s artist journey because he’s always given “ great support ”on her projects and has had fun with the assignments he’s given. Other role models include Mrs. Hiett, her middle school art teacher, and Mr. Kokert, her freshman year art teacher. These teachers inspired Lupe to continue her passion for art and never give it up. “I look at their artwork and I want to improve my art to their level.” She says.
Lupe’s passion for art dates back to her childhood. “ It’s what I’ve been good at since I was little ” Even as a child she’s impressed the people around her and has been involved in school activities such as IKE’s art club with Ms Borrowman and Vapa night. “ In elementary school I would make silly potato head portraits of my family . . and then I realized I was kind of good at it. ” She says this is because her teachers always complimented her art and it made her more confident in her abilities. Later on, she’s leaned more towards exceeding in art projects that weren’t always just in art class. Lupe’s always been “ THAT ” classmate. Y’know, the one where your teacher makes you draw or make a poster for a lesson or assignment and you’re so disappointed. So, you just create something lazily, something just enough to get the credit. Then, you see Lupe’s project and it’s so well made with lots of detail and attention to it. You can tell she spent so much time creating it and you’re in awe that you two even get the same grade for it. Jaws dropped. This is a real story between her and I. This took place in December 2024 in our History class with Mr. Martinelli and her ability to be so excited for a project because she got to draw for it was very admirable. Every assignment for whatever class that involved creating art was an opportunity for Lupe to do what she enjoyed.
“I hope my art makes people feel like they are capable of being able to express themselves the way I do “Lupe emphasizes how she believes art doesn’t always have to be super meaningful or have a “message” and if you just want to create art to create art for something as little as just for the fun of it, then do it! “ I believe art can be fun, too. It doesn’t need to be perfect or full of detail. Just a simple sketch is just as important if it means a lot to you. ” She believes art is a perfect way to express yourself and what you’re interested in.
The type of art Guadalupe specializes in is realism, shading, and attention to detail. She prefers to use references for her artwork and use the grid method to create a piece. The grid method is a technique used by artists like Lupe where a photo is divided into multiple small squares so the artist can then copy the individual squares onto their own canvas and create a new art piece. Soon Lupe hopes to create her own artistic projects and, just like her role models, become a teacher herself.
