Students believe all bathrooms at Eisenhower should be opened, at all times, during school hours. This is because students have problems finding an open bathroom around campus and are getting in trouble for being out too long looking for the open bathroom. Students feel that the supervisors in charge of closing and opening the bathrooms should open them before school starts and close them after all students have left campus. But instead the school decides to open them ten minutes after students have gone to class.
The principal of Eisenhower high school, Ms. Pulido, states that all bathrooms cannot be open at all times since there is not enough supervision staff. According to the bathroom policy of the school, only one person can be in one stall, “Students need to keep their hands to themselves”. One of the only specific reasons they have closed the bathrooms is because kids have broken things inside, like doors or other items. Something else is that the bathrooms are closed the first ten minutes of class, teachers can not let their students go to the bathroom the first ten minutes of class, it is a rule. The ones in charge of opening and closing the bathrooms are security.
One of the assistant principals, Ms. Casarrubias, affirms that bathrooms are closed to keep students safe during school hours. Besides that she also says that if no bathroom is open students have the option to go to the nurses bathroom, “Bathrooms are closed for students to be on time to class”.
Here in the next few paragraphs are some examples of the students’ opinion on this statement.
Eisenhower admin staff have valid reasons on why they keep most of the bathrooms close, yet on the other side, students have a different perspective on this. For example, the student, Sophia Chavez, thinks it may be better for students if the bathrooms would be opened the first ten minutes of class. Either way if kids were trying to ditch in the bathrooms security should be checking that there’s nobody inside of the bathrooms trying to ditch. Also teachers can still follow the rule of not letting students go to the bathroom the first ten minutes of class. Students should also know that they need to go to the bathroom before the bell rings.
Another point of view, Gilbert Mosqueda, Perspective on this is that, it is very inconvenient and inconsiderate of the staff to not open the bathrooms. Although it isn’t bad on their behalf some students smoke and do bad things in those bathrooms. Also those kids take away the opportunity for other kids that need to actually use the bathroom. “Students have been smoking and doing all sorts of nonsense and nasty things.” In addition to this, Gilbert also thinks the reason the bathrooms aren’t opened is, “because other kids don’t care about school and their peers are a no go so, by them smoking and doing other things that aren’t meant for bathrooms could result in that ability of being taken away by authorities”.
Also the student, Yosselin Romero, states that when she doesn’t find an open bathroom around campus she has to wait until she gets home to do her personal needs, “this can cause accidents”. Also she says that possibly they close most of the bathrooms because kids don’t know how to keep them clean.
Furthermore, on some other opinions, Argelia Arenas, affirms that it’s not okay that the bathrooms are closed because people need to use the bathroom for their private duties, “Like us girls need it just in case we are on our time of the month, so it just seems unfair”. She also says that the bathrooms may be closed since students are doing inappropriate things or trying to skip classes.
Lastly we have Kennan Corado. Kennan thinks it’s irritating when one of the bathrooms is not opened because, “all the bathrooms are so far away from each other”. She also thinks that bathrooms are closed since students are trying to stay in there and not go to class.
It concluded that students have valid reasons why bathrooms being closed is an important conflict that has to be solved.
