From K-pop to punk rock to corridos, music choices at Eisenhower High School are very diverse and ever changing. A recent survey that was conducted reflects the diversity of not only the students but their music interests as well. Out of the students that participated in the survey that was conducted, over 40% of them were juniors and over 30% being seniors. In terms of the streaming service that participants use, Spotify was the most popular with 70.3% of participants using this service. The second most used service was Apple Music with 32.4%. Surprisingly, one kid stated that they use a Walkman. The next questions that were featured in the survey asked students to name their 2 most listened to genres of music. Genres that were available for selection include pop, rock, rap, hip-hop, RnB, indie, alternative the option to add another if not given as an option. It was found that alternative was the most popular genre with 18.9% of survey participants choosing this as their most listened to genre. Rap was the second most popular genre with 21.6% of survey participants choosing this as their second most listened to genre of music.
Those who participated in the survey also answered the questions of who their first, second and third most listened to/favorite artists were. The artists that were mentioned most often were Radiohead, The Marias, Drake, Wave to Earth, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, Daniel Caesar and Michael Jackson. Participants were also asked to state the reason why the artists they named were important to them. For example, Ray M. stated, “Their ability to portray certain emotions and concepts” makes them important to me. Some students even stated that the reason artists were important was because they help the focus on work like Leslye N. who said, “I really enjoy their music…they help me focus better.” A participant by the name of Aaron C. even reflected that the artists they listen to “don’t hold any importance, they just help me go through the day.”
Music at Eisenhower is more than just background noise, it’s a part of students and who they are. Whether it’s helping them complete homework, boosting their moods before games or just connecting with friends over shared musical interests, music plays an undeniable part in their everyday lives. No matter the genre or artist, one thing is for sure: Ike students are always finding ways to express themselves through the music they love.
