California recently passed new laws and it is important that we go over them since they can be in place next school year or quarter. These laws cover education, immigration, environment, technology, and Housing.
The new laws we will go over first are educational laws since they are the most relevant to Eisenhower students. The new education laws go over four new additions, the first one being bill AB 727 which will be “Expanding mental health resources for LGBTQ youth.” as stated in the article. The effect for students will be more mental health resources and targeted support which can improve student’s mental health. The next law is bill AB 1264 which shows a “Ban on ultra-processed foods in schools.” This results in improved health outcomes as well as stronger academics and improved behavior. Furthermore, in law AB 1454 it discusses “Supporting student literacy” This creates better self-esteem and lifelong skills for students. Lastly, is bill SB 640 which says, “Streamlining college admissions…” This reduces the emotional and financial damage that college may cause for some students.
Another topic is health since it can affect the lives of both students and teachers alike. The new bill, AB 419, will make sure students will know your rights” According to the text. As a result, there are increased safety measures along with enhanced data privacy which will greatly secure privacy. The last bill for immigration passed is AB 495 due to this, support during a bad time and more safety.
The next category we will be going over is the environment since it is always important as a community to take pride in it. This bill that was recently passed is SB 1053, and It suggests an “Updated plastic bag regulations” which will contribute more access to better materials and lower cost to textbooks.
The fourth category is technology since it is always adapting and our growing generation grew up with it and is thus most comfortable with it. The first bill being bill AB 489 as it discusses “Preventing AI as posing as licensed professionals”. This means improved safety while working with ai. The next bill is SB 243 that states that safeguards will be placed for “ minors using AI chatbots” this demonstrates better safety for minors that are on the web.
The last but definitely not least, housing, since we are all getting older and will soon be ready to move out. The first bill being from this section is AB 628 “protecting renters” This law ensures renters will avoid any additional funds when moving into an apartment because a landlord is supposed to have a refrigerator for the client. This means new home owners can save money due to already having a refrigerator. The last bill is SB 79 which says, “Transit-oriented housing development” which goes over how communities need to make a plan and hope for a positive change. This can contribute to students taking pride about where they stay and each contribute so we can be better as a community in the future.
With all the new bills added, what is most important in your life?
