In Florida a tragedy occurred when two teenage best friends, George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, were buried alive, by something that seemed fun and harmless. According to AbcNews, the boys were best friends who were spending time together when the accident happened. The two boys were 14 years olds named George Watts and Derrick Hubbard. They were hanging out near Sportsman’s Park in Florida. According to People.com, the boys liked going to a sand pit near the park because it was a place where they could play and dig. On January 11, 2026, according to People.com the two boys were digging a large hole and tunnel in the sand when the walls suddenly collapsed. The tunnel was about four to five feet deep, which caused a huge amount of sand to fall on them and trap them underneath. Fox News reported that the boys were just trying to have fun outside and be adventurous. Their coach Corey Edwards even made a statement saying “They were just kids doing what we try to tell kids to do, ‘Get outside and play.” The boys were just trying to have fun together, they never imagined the one thing that they usually do would bring them harm.
According to ABC News, The emergency call was made when the boy’s parents became worried because they were not answering their phones and did not come home. One of the parents used one of the boys’ phone locations to help find them. When the parents arrived at the park they saw the boys bikes and shoes near the sand hole. According to People.com Emergency workers rushed to the scene and began digging, attempting to rescue the boys. After 20 minutes of digging George Watts was found with a pulse but was unconscious and not breathing on his own. Derrick Hubbard was found without a pulse and later passed away at the hospital according to Fox News.
The deaths of the two boys had a big effect on their families, school, and community. People.com explained that the boys were described as inseparable best friends who did everything together. Their school offered counseling to help students to deal with the loss of their classmates and many people offered support to help their families. Overall, the news of the boys passing was heartbreaking and unexpected. This pair of boys were not trying to do anything dangerous or something they thought would harm them; they were simply just being boys.
