Markwayne Mullin might be a name you have heard recently if you have seen the recent departure of Kristi Noem from the Department of Homeland Security. But many people don’t know exactly who he is or what he stands for. Today I’ll be going briefly over his nomination, what he’s known for, and what you can expect from a niche pick by President Trump.
His Career
Markwayne Mullin started his career as a Republican representative for the 2nd Congressional District for Oklahoma. Defeating George Faught after the departure of Dan Boren who held that seat, he served in the House for about 11 years before winning a special election to replace Oklahoman senator Jim Inhofe, gaining the majority vote in a group of 13 candidates including Scott Pruitt and Nathan Dahm. He has been serving as an Oklahoman Senator since, where he has recently been tapped by President Donald Trump for the seat of Homeland Security Secretary, where he has yet to be confirmed by the Senate to acquire the position.
What He’s Known For
Markwayne Mullin has always been a kooky conservative politician, voting staunchly for far-right policies and self identifying with the MAGA movement. Unfortunately for Mullin, his breakthrough in the public eye wasn’t for something heroic. On November 14, 2023, Mullin was attending a Senate hearing on the PRO Act when he challenged Teamsters president Sean O’Brien to a fight after the two had social media arguments over an earlier confrontation about O’Brien’s salary and the heated exchange that followed afterwards. This has extremely negatively affected his reputation with fellow senators and has been extremely scrutinized in the Senate confirmation meetings in regards to his nomination for DHS Secretary.
What the Future Holds
Although many have been afraid of Kristi Noem’s eccentric and aggressive policy being exacerbated by Mullin becoming the new Secretary, just taking out the old with an even worse new, I would like to remind readers that Mullin still has to go through Senate to be able to be 100% confirmed to become the new Homeland Secretary. And although we cannot say for sure if they’ll let him in or not, his past actions and known issues with anger and confrontation along with exorbitant amounts of foreign travel tip the odds out of his favor heavily. To learn more about Markwayne Mullin, tune into any news channel that is going to stream Mullin’s confirmation for DHS Secretary, or look into his political profile on websites that track what policies he votes on (like BillTrack50 and Politico)
That’s all on Markwayne Mullin, I recommend you to take action and research into him and advocate in your community, whether it’s for or against. Thank you for reading Eagles!
