A plague has been sweeping the school of Eisenhower. One that, rather than make their presence known, chooses to hide in the darkest corners of every classroom. I’m of course referring to Eisenhower’s new Talon ticket posters.
At the start of the second semester, Eisenhower began distributing to and encouraging teachers to use promotional posters created using generative Ai to advertise their ne wTalon Ticket reward system.
These posters can be found everywhere around the campus and are now a source of controversy for the school as students and teachers alike question the ethics of how these advertisements were made.
When the student body was asked for their thoughts around the posters, the responses varied significantly from person to person. Some students believe that the use of generative AI for the Talon Ticket posters could be viewed as hypocritical.
“I’m not allowed to use Chat for my assignments but they can use it for their little posters?” exclaimed one disgruntled student.
On the contrary, other students didn’t think that the use of Artificial Intelligence wasn’t cause for any concern.
“Yeah it’s corny…” Another student says, “but it’s just a poster… I use AI all the time, so it’s not a problem.” Even some of the school’s staff seem to agree with this sentiment “I think it’s food as long as it’s used in a positive way.”
This split support for AI usage on Eisenhower’s advertisements could prove detrimental for the overall wellbeing of the school as a whole. At the end of the day, when our school chooses to allow these posters for promotion, they subconsciously tell their students that it’s ok for them to rely on GenAI models like these.
When you ask the average person how they feel about Ai in recent years, they’re likely not gonna have much to day, Some are gonna say they love it, some are gonna say they hate it, but the wide majority of people are likely not gonna have much to actually say about it , and that’s completely by design.
Tools like Chat GPT and Google Gemini have done such a good job integrating themselves into the lives of everyone’s everyday that now when you do something that you usually do, like google something, and see these models, you barely think about it. It’s almost as if they’ve been there the whole time, you just never noticed it until now.
And with newer models like Sora and Midjourney supplying people with seemingly endless amounts of generated entertainment, people are quickly forgetting why so many people were hesitant to jump on the AI train during their popularization in 2022.
The truth of the matter is that Generative Ai is a thief that takes from almost every facet of the human experience. It steals creative properties from artists for their models to “learn” off of, It steals millions of acres of natural forest land from the earth, it even steals valuable drinking water from people in desperate need.
Despite the many tragedies that AI inflicts onto society, people are still choosing to blind themselves to these truths all for the everyday conveniences that GenAI offers.
Eisenhower needs to stop allowing the use of these posters and prohibit the future os of Ai for any advertisements that use such a tool for their creation. On top of this, we as the student body should not be so quick to allow our school to get away with such flagrant behavior. Not only is the use of generative artificial intelligence a hypocritical action, but its use facilitates the further adoption of this corrupt tool that causes major environmental, creative, and ethical issues for people around the world.
