When scientists brought pieces of an asteroid back to Earth, they weren’t just collecting rocks. They were looking for clues about where life itself may have started.
In 2023, the OSIRIS-REx mission returned samples from the asteroid Bennu. The mission, led by NASA, allowed researchers to analyze material that has remained largely unchanged since the early solar system. What scientists found inside those samples turned out to be far more complex than expected.
The Bennu samples contained sugars, including ribose, which is a key component of RNA. RNA is one of the molecules that helps store and transmit genetic information in living organisms. Along with these sugars, scientists also discovered amino acids, nucleobases, and phosphates. These molecules are considered some of the main chemical ingredients needed for life/ Researches also studied and identified presolar stardust in the samples. This material formed before the solar system itself existed, meaning the asteroid contains particles older than the sun and planets. The presence of such ancient material suggests that the chemical pieces needed for life may have existed in space long before Earth formed.
Other studies of the samples revealed even more unusual materials. Scientists described finding a thick, complex organic substance sometimes referred to as “space gum.” This material is rich in nitrogen and oxygen, elements that can drive chemical reactions that build more complicated molecules. These types of reactions are essential for forming the biological compounds associated with life. The discoveries also strengthen a long-standing theory about how Earth may have obtained the chemicals necessary for life. Since asteroids like Bennu contain organic molecules and sugars, it’s possible that ancient impacts delivered these materials to the early Earth. Bennu itself travels roughly 200 million miles from Earth, showing that these compounds can exist far beyond our planet.
Studies of the asteroid also suggest that organic compounds may be common throughout the solar system. If asteroids contain these materials in large quantities, then the building blocks for life may be widespread rather than rare.
Scientists continue to study Bennu’s samples to better understand how planets formed and how organic chemistry developed billions of years ago. Each new discovery helps piece together the long history of our solar system and the possible origins of life on Earth.
